Ronde Barber
Since 1998 Ronde Barber has been a fixture as the starting right cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense, and one of the best at his position to ever play the game. He is well known in the sports world for being one half of the NFL's most successful pair of twins. Brother Tiki played for the Giants from 1997 to 2006, and is now making his living as an analyst and news reporter. Ronde, however, is still going strong in the NFL.
Born prematurely in Montgomery,Virginia on April 7,1975, the twins had suffered from seizures up until around age 5 because of their problems at birth. Barber's real name is actually Jamael Oronde, which means "first born son". The Barbers were raised and supported by their mother, Geraldine, for most of their lives. Geraldine and husband James divorced soon after the twins were born, and she worked hard to make these brothers the best they could be. Ronde, along with brother Tiki, were not only excellent athletes, but under the guidance of their mother became standouts in the classroom as well. There was no sports or practice until their school work was done, and you can see even today how this was a positive influence for them throughout life.
Ronde was an honor society member at Cave City High School, and excelled in track as a champion hurdler who two times had won the 55 meter national title. As expected, he was also one of the best players on the football team, and one year even shared Male Athlete of the Year with none other than brother Tiki. Moving on to the University of Virginia in 1994 Ronde became the ACC rookie of the year. While hauling in 15 career interceptions and earning a degree in commerce, Ronde made the ALL ACC squad 3 times out of three seasons, as he red-shirted his freshman year.
In 1997 he was a third round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and it initially looked as though Ronde would be just another player in a very talented league. Since then, however, Barber has broken the Tampa Bay record for career interceptions, which now stands at 37. He has also achieved a milestone for his position, being the first cornerback in NFL history to record 20 career interceptions and 20 career sacks. He is also only two defensive touchdowns away from Rod Woodson's record of thirteen in a career. Barber has also won a Super Bowl with the Bucaneers in 2003 when they crushed the Raiders 48-21. With three Pro Bowl selections as well, it's not hard to imagine that Mr. Barber could someday find himself enshrined among other NFL legends in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
