Josh Johnson
Josh Johnson Revealed
Josh Johnson is a second year player and current starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 23-year-old was selected in the fifth round of the 2008 draft but did not get into any games until the 2009 season. As of September 29, 2009, he was handed the reins as the struggling team's number one quarterback. No one doubts Johnson's raw ability, as he's been something of an enigma for scouts the last several years. The only question is whether or not he can turn his physical talents into on the field performance.
A University of San Diego graduate, Johnson set an NCAA record for passing efficiency, racking up an impressive rating of 176.68 for his four-year career. He began his college experience backing up Todd Mortenson and was then given the starting job for his sophomore year. He responded by throwing 36 touchdowns and completing over 70 percent of his passes, quickly cementing his reputation as the team's leader and most valuable player. He would continue this stellar performance over his last two seasons in San Diego, lighting up the league with 34 touchdowns and 3,320 yards in his junior year, and finishing with 43 more touchdowns against just one interception in his senior year. When all was said and done, Johnson held the school record for passing yards, touchdowns thrown, and passes completed.
Johnson, cousin of Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch, is very athletic and has the ability to make a big passing play in or outside the pocket, and can also run well enough to pick up a few yards with his legs as well. Scouts and coaches alike have been very impressed with his leadership abilities and work ethic, giving him the inside edge on improving continually over the course of his professional career. His arm isn't as strong as his coaches would prefer, and he has a hard time with the deep pass, but the 6'3" Johnson makes up for some of this with above average footwork that continues to get better. With continued hard work and dedication, the NFL could very well have a rising star in the making if Johnson can learn to adjust on the fly to the difficult life of an NFL quarterback.
