Josh Freeman
First Round Draft Pick Josh Freeman
Josh Freeman was born Joshua Tyler Freeman in Kansas City, Missouri on January 13, 1988. Freeman has football in his blood as his father Ron, played in the United States Football League. Ron Freeman also served as the defensive coordinator for the high school team that his son would eventually play for.
In high school, Freeman played at Grandview High School in Kansas City, Missouri under head coach Jason Godfrey. Josh Freeman was, even then, considered a superior player and received many honors, among them an election to the Kansas City Star All-Metro team, and being chosen to play in the U.S. Army High School All-America game. Freeman got a 4-star rating from several of the top prospect rating websites, and he was considered to be among the best young quarterbacks in the nation. During his time at Grandview, Freeman shattered 10 school records, among them career passing yards (7,175), and touchdowns in a game (6).
During his collegiate career at Kansas State University, where he majored in business administration, Freeman continued to impress and set records even in his freshman year. Freeman was the first freshman to start in the quarterback position since 1976, and he began to lead his team to a series of decisive wins in the coming years. While at KSU, Freeman started in 32 out of 35 games, during which time he threw 44 touchdowns, a new school record. Freeman also set a new record for passing yards (8,078) yards during his three years at KSU.
After his junior year at KSU, Freeman left school to enter the 2009 National Football League draft. Going into the NFL draft, Freeman was widely considered to be the best available quarterback and was expected to be taken early in the first round. Freeman did get chosen fairly early, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him as the 17th overall pick in the NFL draft. As the sixth overall pick for Tampa Bay, Freeman became the highest drafted quarterback for the team since 1994.
In 2009, Freeman has been inactive, serving as the third quarterback for his first three games with Tampa Bay. In the fourth and fifth games of the season, Freeman served as backup quarterback but has yet to see any time on the professional football field.
