Cadillac Williams
Carnell Lamar "Cadillac" Williams
Carnell Lamar "Cadillac" Williams is a highly rated running back for the National Football League’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Born on April 21, 1982 in Gadsden, Alabama, Williams entered the NFL as a first-round pick by Tampa Bay in the 2005 NFL Draft. Since then, Williams has established himself as one of the most productive players for the Buccaneers.
In his very first career game in September 2005, Williams racked up a total of 148 rushing yards and scored a game clinching 71-yard touchdown against Minnesota. At that time it was the fifth-best rushing performance by a rookie running back in his first game in NFL history. In his first three games Williams established an NFL rookie record with 434 rushing yards. By the end of his first season, Williams had accumulated six 100-yard rushing performances and had set a Buccaneers rookie record by rushing for a total of 1,178 yards.
Since that electrifying start, Williams has demonstrated an ability to consistently produce big plays for the Buccaneers. By the end of the 2008 season, Williams had produced 42 runs of 10 or more yards for the Buccaneers. He has begun 2009 right where he left off last year with solid performances in both his games so far including a career high seven receptions in a single game in Buffalo.
Williams showed his talent early. He graduated from Etowah High School in Atalla, Alabama as a highly rated and heavily coveted player by major universities. He initially signed up to play football with the University of Tennessee but later switched to Auburn University after that college’s head coach Tommy Tuberville visited Williams personally at home and convinced him to play for the school. Williams started playing for Auburn as a freshman in 2001 and quickly established himself as one of the most outstanding running backs the university has ever produced. In 42 games at Auburn, Williams rushed a total of 741 times for 3,831 yards and 45 touchdown breaking previous school records for rushing attempts and touchdowns in the process. During his college career Williams garnered several honors including being selected for the 2004 All-American First-Team, and earning nine Southeastern Conference Player (SEC) of the Week awards, the most in conference history.
Williams, who is the son of Sherry Williams and Aaron Turner was given the nickname "Cadillac" by a TV sportscaster in Atlanta who compared his style of play and his running with that of the automobile. The name has stuck.
